“Sprechen Sie Deutsch?” is actually used when talking to multiple people. When addressing just one person, the correct structure is “Sprichst du Deutsch?”

Not that it matters, since this comic is like 4-5 years old. :P

That’s not true… Sprechen sie Deutsch? (with a lowercase s) is asking somebody if a third, separate group of people speak German.

What you thought would be “Spricht ihr Deutsch?”

Sprichst du Deutsch is the informal mode, if you were talking to a close friend.

And the way it was written is the polite form, which would be used in basically any situation that you didn’t know whether they spoke german (you probably know whether your friend speaks it =P)

    The scary thing is, I know all those words…and I’m bi-lingual o.o

Don’t mind me passing through, reading all the comics backwards, but the comic is correct unless the German is a jerk. You’d know if your friend speaks German (and if not, would probably ask in the language you normally speak to them in), so du is NOT appropriate. Sie is. YAY FOR MISSING THE POINT OF THE COMIC TO ARGUE INCORRECTLY!
