Irony?
This one’s a bit of a cop out on my part. Originally, I just thought it would be funny to show someone buried by shovels. Then I started wondering if that was truly “ironic” in a literal sense or just an Alanis Morisette sense. Rather than looking it up, I decided to work my actual confusion into the comic. Plus, I got to make an extra little jab at English majors.

I absolutely love how the guy is being crushed by a pile of shovels and the workers are standing around contemplating whether it counts as irony or not.

Did the man ever say out loud “I for one know I will never be crushed by a pile of shovels!”? That would be pretty ironic. (At least the populist non-asshole definition of irony.)

My understanding is that it’s not ironic, but it probably would be in the situation Great Joe Bivins mentions above. Either way, the comic is great

I wouldn’t call this a cop out at all. I think the irony is that you’d use a shovel to dig someone out of a pile of ANYTHING. Sooo…

Ironic that he’s packing boxes with an English degree? There’s a lot of layers here

Brevity is the soul of wit.
Try to keep your jokes short and sweet, and they’ll be funnier.

That’s shovelry. Irony would be if he were buried under a pile of irons…

Following on from reynard61, I thought it was because shovels are made of iron (or steel, which is mostly iron)

It would be ironic if he was buried under a pile of irons. Just messing with you. I do believe somebody is going to be tested for illegal substances.

@reynard61,
it might not be true irony – but whatever it is, he has it in spades

The pain! Oh the pain! The comments really killed me on this one.
