My Ex- and I (before we were Ex-es) slept under two single doona covers, overlapping in the middle. Not for this reason - we just had them from being single - but it solved this issue before it began.

He should hide extra covers in the room, then when she takes the covers he goes for his secret covers stash!

I just pull up the mattress sheet and use that for covers.
